The Atlanta Dream will have the third player in franchise history play in the Olympics. Rhyne Howard, the star guard for the Dream, has officially been named to the U.S. Women’s 3×3 Basketball team for the upcoming 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. This announcement comes as no surprise to fans and analysts alike, given Howard’s exceptional performance in the WNBA over the past few seasons.
Howard, who has been a pivotal player for the Dream since she was drafted first overall in the 2022 draft, has consistently demonstrated her skills on the court, making her an invaluable asset to the national team. “Being able to be an Olympian this early in my career, it’s exciting and surreal. I’m looking forward to bringing home the gold but also coming home with the experience of 3×3 and bringing that back to the W,” said Howard.
The 24-year-old guard has had an impressive career trajectory, from her collegiate days at the University of Kentucky, where she led her team to multiple NCAA tournament appearances while also averaging 20.1 points and 6.9 rebounds per game. The Kentucky graduate also will be the first alumnus of the Wildcats women’s basketball program on the Olympic stage.
Howard college career has led to her outstanding performances in the WNBA. This season, Howard is averaging 16.4 points, 5.0 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game, solidifying her status as one of the league’s top players.
Howard joins a roster filled with some of the best talent in the world, including seasoned veterans and emerging stars. With the addition of Howard, the team’s chances of continuing these winning ways have only increased. Howard previously represented Team USA and won gold medals at the 2021 FIBA AmerCup.
