It was an outstanding start for the Braves starting pitcher.
It was a tough start to the regular season for the Atlanta Braves with the team dropping their season-opening series to the San Diego Padres.
With the short week – and the offensive struggles and ludicrous bad luck the team had throughout the Padres series – the honor for our first Atlanta Braves Player of the Week of the 2025 campaign here at Battery Power goes to starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach.
Schwellenbach, coming off of an outstanding rookie season in the Braves rotation, took the mound against San Diego on Saturday and looked every bit as dominant as he did last season.
In his start on Saturday, he tossed 90 pitches in six innings, 58 of which went for strikes. He allowed only one hit – a second inning single to Jackson Merrill – and hit Xander Bogaerts with a pitch in the same inning, but otherwise only issued a fourth inning walk to Merrill to clutter the bases.Schwellenbach struck out four of the 20 batters he faced putting up a 75 game score according to FanGraphs with a 0.36 WPA/LI. All six of his pitcher were effective through the game. He was able to get a swing-and-miss on 38.5-percent of his sinker and 15-percent or better with his slider and splitter.
As it stands, Schwellenbach is in line to start Atlanta’s home opener on April 4 against the Miami Marlins.
