Who’s been better than Schwelly?
For the second week-in-a-row the Atlanta Braves Player of the Week here at Battery Power is starting pitcher Spencer Schwellenbach.
The way he has pitched so far in 2025, we are one week away from re-naming the award the “Battery Power’s Spencer Schwellenbach of Week Award,”
Overall, the Braves won a game! It was a fantastic 10-0 beat-down of the Miami Marlins on Friday night. Unfortunately, Saturday night was another shutout of the Braves offense. The bats did wake up some during this past week with Michael Harris II, Matt Olson and Ozzie Albies all having their moments; Drake Baldwin got his first RBI and extra base hit and Marcell Ozuna still leads the league in walks.
But no one dominated at the plate or on the mound the way Schwellenbach did.
Schwellenbach was almost untouchable during his Friday start against the Marlins – pitching eight innings and allowing only two singles while striking out 10 batters and walking none. Of his 99 pitches thrown, 73 of them were strikes.
He has yet to allow a run and has been credited with 0.6 fWAR in his first two starts with a 30.4-percent strikeout rate. Yes, it is early, but Schwellenbach has been effortlessly dominant. If that continues for the season, there is no doubt that he will be in the conversation for awards more prestigious than the Battery Power Player of the Week Award.
Schwellenbach is scheduled to face the Philadelphia Phillies on Thursday. Check back next Sunday to see if that start lands him here again. At this point, betting against him might not be the wisest of decisions.
Two weeks into the Braves season, “Who betta’ than Schwelly?”
The answer has been nobody.
