Blewett debuted in 2020 but has only seen action in 21 career games with his most extensive experience coming with the Minnesota Twins last season when he tossed 20.1 inning in 12 appearances.
Suarez was the return when the Braves parted ways with former first round draft pick Ian Anderson prior to the start of the regular season. Suarez saw limited action with Atlanta after joining the team from the Los Angeles Angels. He had pitched in three games for the Braves as a long-man, hurling 7.1 innings while striking out five and allowing only two earned runs. He struggled with command, however, walking seven batters.
Blewett began the year with the Twins but was was claimed by the O’s after being waived by Minnesota. He has struck out 11 batters while issuing only one free pass in nine innings this season. For his career, he has a 23.1-percent strikeout rate using a four-seam fastball and slider as his two primary pitches.
Blewett, 29, was a second round pick of the Kansas City Royals in 2014 and pitched with that organization through the 2021 season – including his MLB debut.
Despite his success in the big leagues – he carries a 1.93 ERA across 37.1 innings with a 3.21 FIP – his minor league number have not been as good. He has spent most of his minor league career as a starting pitcher with 176 starts in 236 appearances.
This won’t be Blewett’s first time in the Braves organization. He spent 2023 with Double-A Mississippi, making 13 starts in 17 appearances across 72.2 innings striking out 76 batters.
