Slowly but surely rumors are continuing to pick up around baseball.
While we await the hot stove of the MLB offseason to really heat up, Monday brought news of the latest evidence that MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred and other decision makers around the sport are constantly discussing ways baseball could change. This time, it is in the form of a “Golden At-Bat Rule” – a team could use any hitter it wants for one, specific at-bat during a game. Jayson Stark goes into detail on how this rule could be added to the sport.
It is important to note that this made news simply because it was mentioned as being a discussion topic in the recent past. It does not appear that it is some imminent change to the game that will happen in the near future. And while intriguing, it also seems unnecessary. The game itself is fine, at least in my opinion, and has become more enjoyable to watch as the pitch clock has shortened games. Instead of trying to change the game itself, baseball should continue prioritizing ways to grow its fanbase.
