Williams, 28, has appeared for Atlanta in each of the past two seasons. Last year, he spent much of the season with the big league club although he only saw action in 37 games. He played second base, shortstop, third base and left field for Atlanta and was used as a pinch-runner in 13 contests. He offered the organization defensive flexibility and above average baserunning but produced only a 54 wRC+ at the plate.
Williams also pitched in three games, allowing two runs over four innings.
Williams being outrighted likely means that Eli White and Nick Allen will be the infielders the Braves will have on the bench for Opening Day. White, who has primarily been an outfielder during his MLB career has seen extensive action on the infield during Spring Training. Allen, who was picked up from the Athletics during the offseason, looks to be the team’s back-up shortstop.
Williams was a third round draft pick by the Philadelphia Phillies in 2015. He has appeared in the big leagues with five different organizations since making his MLB debut in 2021. In two seasons with Atlanta, he has played in 41 games.
