Since their 2021 World Series win, the Atlanta Braves have consistently performed at a high level in baseball. However, their situation took a turn for the worse in 2024 due to a combination of injuries and poor offensive performance which led to a significant decline in their standing. Currently, the Braves are trailing the red-hot New York Mets by just one game. The Mets have now secured the third and final National League Wild Card position, which the Braves had maintained for several weeks. To reclaim their spot in the standings, the Braves will require significant improvements from multiple players.
3 Braves Players Who Must Deliver
Marcell Ozuna
Marcell Ozuna has been an indispensable player for the Braves throughout the 2024 season. However, despite his stellar overall performance, he has noticeably quieted down in September. With 37 home runs under his belt, he currently ranks fifth in the majors, but surprisingly, he hasn’t hit a home run since August 20. The Braves’ offense has been struggling and their lead over the Mets has dwindled. Meanwhile, the Mets have been on a tear, winning 10 of their last 11 games, applying pressure to all teams in the division. The Braves suffered a tough 1-0 loss in their first game against the Cincinnati Reds. It is critical for the Braves that Ozuna regains his previous form and gets back to hitting home runs to help their cause.
Matt Olson
The Braves have been facing significant challenges due to Matt Olson’s performance this season. In 2023, Olson put up remarkable numbers with 54 home runs, a .283 batting average, a .389 on-base percentage, and an impressive plate discipline. While it was unlikely for him to match those MVP-like figures, his current season has been disappointing. He’s batting just .233 with 25 home runs, and his plate discipline has taken a hit. His current pace suggests he will only hit 28 home runs this season. Olson’s struggles extend beyond his power as he’s been battling to get hits and has been plagued by a high number of strikeouts. A strong finish to the season for Olson would be crucial for Atlanta as they strive to maintain their lead over New York.
Jarred Kelenic
Amid numerous injuries, Jarred Kelenic initially proved to be a valuable addition to the Braves. Yet, in recent times, Kelenic has encountered challenges with his hitting performance. While he has achieved a few home runs recently, the Braves require greater contributions from their esteemed outfielder. His batting average stands at .233, and he is facing difficulties in driving in runs for the team. The Braves are looking to enhance their offensive capabilities to better compete against the Mets.
