In a tale as old as time, the veteran reliever heads to Triple-A.
Jesse Chavez is back in the Atlanta Braves organization for the second time this season as the 41-year-old right-handed reliever has re-signed on a minor league deal according to the team’s official transaction page. Chavez elected free agency after being designated for assignment after making his season debut against the Los Angels Dodgers.
Chavez, who signed with Atlanta late in Spring Training after being released by the Texas Rangers, didn’t make the Opening Day roster but was added to the 26-man roster after reliever Hector Neris was designated for assignment after two disastrous outings with the Braves.
Chavez, who is in his 18th MLB season, pitched two innings for Atlanta on March 31, allowing a home run in a two inning outing. The team designated him for assignment after his appearance to add Zach Thompson as a fresh bullpen arm.
Chavez, who debuted in 2008 and first pitched for Atlanta in 2010 has appeared with the Braves in every season since 2021. He pitched in 46 games with Atlanta last season.
