With the twenty fourth pick MLB Pipeline has the Braves selecting the ambidextrous Jurrangelo Cijntje out of Mississippi State. You might recall Jurrangelo making all of the waves in the Little League World Series a few years ago when he showcased his unique talent on the mound – bringing a pair of gloves and showcasing his ability much to the delight of everyone tuning in. Grown up now, Jurrangelo Cijntje has put together a good year for the Mississippi State Bulldogs going 8-2 with a 3.67 ERA, 1.103 WHIP while striking out 11 per 9 and walking 3 per 9.
While he has pitched with both arms, it’s the right side that has scouts talking about him being a first round pick. From the right, Jurrangelo sits in the mid-90s, touching 97. To go with that, Jurrangelo also has a sharp slider that sits in the mid-80s and darts away from opposing right handed hitters. His third pitch, a changeup, is a fringe pitch that needs some work but he’s still able to get decent arm side movement on it.
While he can also pitch from the left side, don’t expect the Braves, if selected by them, to feature him from that side. His fastball sits in the low-90s with a similar slider but not a ton of differentiation in speed. Jurrangelo is an extremely athletic and intriguing pick that saw his command vastly improve his sophomore year. That command, however, is still fringe at best and will need to improve to earn an MLB pitcher grade. That being said, Jurrangelo possess good upside and an intriguing arm that has made him worthy of a first round pick.
