Let’s look at Tech’s FCS opponent this season.
Every year, most FBS teams play at least one game against an FCS opponent. This season, Georgia Tech will face the Virginia Military Institute Keydets. Last season, the Keydets finished 5-6 with a 4-4 conference record. Notably, the beat the 14th-ranked Western Carolina Catamounts to close out their season.
The Keydets’ running game brought more success than the passing game did. VMI quarterbacks managed to throw for 2,000 yards, but they had just 10 touchdowns. On the ground, running back Hunter Rice had 14 touchdowns by himself. Rice returns for his senior season this year, so he should continue to be a big part of the Keydets’ offense.
Overall, though, the Keydets’ offense struggled. They averaged just over 15 points per game. Rice got a lot of touchdowns, but the team averaged under 4 yards a rush. Through the air, receivers averaged less than 6.5 yards per pass.
On defense, the Keydets’ didn’t fare any better. As a whole, they gave up nearly 25 points per game. In general, the defense was also pretty ineffective. The defense allowed a yard more per play than the offense generated, so they were constantly playing at a pretty sizeable disadvantage.
Although, anything can happen, I fully expect this to go like any other FBS-FCS match-up. This will likely be a great opportunity to see what some of the redshirting freshmen can do.
Is there anything you’re looking forward to against VMI?
