Georgia Tech scored the first major upset of the 2024 college football season on Saturday.
Georgia Tech took down No. 10 Florida State with a 44-yard field goal as time expired.
it got the program to 1-0 in ACC play and also 1-0 overall heading into Week One next week.
After GT got the win, ESPN’s Trevor Matich gave his take on how the victory came to be and compared it to women’s soccer.
“I tell you, it just makes me think of women’s soccer … one of my favorite sports to watch,” Matich said, via Awful Announcing. “One of my favorite sports to watch outside football is USA Women’s soccer in international play, whether it’s in the Olympics or whether it’s in the World Cup. Because if they struggle early, if a team gets a breakaway and gets a goal against them, a lot of teams in soccer will like clutch their pearls and be all worried.
“Women, you just see the attitude rise up, it’s like, ‘Oh, no way man.’ And they come right back and they smash and they smash until they win. And Georgia Tech took that first hit from that first drive for a touchdown from Florida State, and they had that same attitude. ‘Oh no, they’re ranked, they’re the big team that everybody’s talking about… and they smashed and they smashed.”
It confused some fans since it came out of left field.
“Trevor Matich just compared Georgia Tech’s mental fortitude to USA Women’s Soccer and while I don’t know if it exactly works, I appreciate the effort and attempt to execute,” one tweet read.
“ESPN fired @RGIII but keeps Trevor Matich… Makes absolutely no sense to me,” another tweet read.
“Is this guy watching the same games I am?” another tweet read.
Georgia Tech was an ACC sleeper heading into this game but that may not be the case anymore. The program has sent a message, saying that it’s here to compete for an ACC title.
Georgia Tech will play Georgia State in its next game on August 31.
