My head hurts from last weekend
Week 9 was pretty average for most pickers. It was a tough one with a lot of big spreads, and most pickers averaged around 5 correct picks. GTSmurf came out on top with 8 correct picks and was followed closely by coin flip with 7 correct picks. Coin flip missed the early picks, but through his 2 weeks of picking he has a correct pick percentage of 72.73%, lucky coin. The leader board hasn’t changed much with mrbuzz1885 on top. mrbuzz1885 has 62 correct picks and is closely followed by EducationalEngineer and wsecor with 59 correct picks. GTSmurf is gaining ground with 58 correct picks so far.
I was busy last weekend so I didn’t get to watch much football. Maybe that was a blessing in disguise.
The Virginia Tech loss was ugly. Worse than that, it was boring. Despite being able to move the ball early, it quickly became apparent how injuries are catching up with our offense. Pyron seemed to get in his head as the game went on and struggle to make a pass. The rushing offense couldn’t get the pushes at the line that they had in previous games and were repeatedly stuffed in the backfield. Philo got to see some downs; we saw some flashes of his talent, but he was unable to get the ball in the end zone. The offense, which is supposed to be our strong suit, looked like it was in a coma for the vast majority of the game. At least Birr got some good kicks in.
The defense looked good, not that it helped us much. VT had some successful drives, but for the most part the defense was able to get multiple 3 and outs and contain a fantastic VT run game. Props to those guys for stepping up. Shame it was a wasted effort.
I’m trying not to be too mad about that game because it is hard to win when some of your biggest players on both sides of the ball are injured. It’s still tough knowing that the game was within reach and we just couldn’t do anything to move the ball. Would’ve been nice to be bowl eligible, but now all I’m left with is a big headache knowing we have an uphill battle to win 1 game in our last 3. It should be doable if our boys can get healthy over the week off. I’m hoping, but until Miami I’m going to be sleeping off this hang over.
This week is Halloween, so it our annual time to pick games based on which mascot would beat the other. We’ll see if this helps my picking percentage at all.
picks:
Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets v Bye Week (No Spread Given)
Logan: A bunch of Yellow Jackets against nothing. I wouldn’t put it past the Yellow Jackets to die of cold this season, but I think they can stay healthy. I’ll take the Yellow Jackets.
Logan’s pick: Yellow Jackets
Louisville Cardinals @ #11 Clemson Tigers (-11.5)
Logan: Either some red birds, or a group of the catholic leadership against a group of Tigers… I think this will be a bloody end for either type of Cardinal.
Logan’s pick: Tigers
World’s Largest Cocktail Party
Florida Gators v uga puppies (-16.5)
Played at Everbank Stadium Jacksonville, FL
Logan: A bunch of Alligators in the state of Florida against some puppy dogs. Now, these are some mean puppy dogs, but I still feel like some gators should be able to devour the puppies. I’ll take the Gators to at least cover.
Logan’s pick: Gators
Texas Tech Red Raiders @ #11 Iowa State Cyclones (-14.5)
Logan: A bunch of guys with guns versus a group of cyclones. I feel like the Raiders might be able to hunker down and wait out most of the cyclones. Red Raiders could try shooting the Cyclones, or throwing tortillas at them, but that will only make the cyclones more deadly. At some point enough tornadoes are going to rip apart pretty much anything in their way.
Logan’s pick: Cyclones
Stanford Cardinals @ NC State Wolfpack (-10.0)
Logan: More Cardinals against tons of blood thirsty animals… Wolfpack should win easy.
Logan’s pick: Wolfpack
#1 Oregon Ducks (-14.5) @ Michigan Wolverines
Logan: Wolverines are nasty little creatures. It would take a horse sized duck to take down some wolverines, and that still might not do it. The Wolverines are also getting this game at home, so water should not play a factor. Despite ducks being able to fly I can’t see a way they take down the wolverines. Wolverines should cover.
Logan’s pick: Wolverines
#18 Pittsburgh Panthers @ #20 SMU Mustangs (-7.5)
Logan: In a matchup for the top of the ACC, we have a group of angry panthers against a group of mustangs. Mustangs are actually pretty touch animals and they can fight pretty well in groups. Panthers are obviously the predatory animal, but they will need to be smart against a larger opponent that could stomp the Panthers to death. I think homefield advantage is a big thing here and I do believe the Mustangs should be able to defend themselves knowing the territory better than the Panthers.
Logan’s pick: Mustangs
Duke Blue Devils @ #5 Miami Hurricanes (-20.0)
Logan: This is an interesting one. Obviously we know how dangerous Hurricanes can be, but this one is going up against a bunch of blue demons (devils). How dangerous is a Hurricane to a devil? Do devils have homes? Do devils even have corporeal forms? I guess it depends on your definition. Given that I don’t know exactly how a Hurricane defeats a devil I will take the devils to outlast the hurricanes.
Logan’s pick: Blue Devils
Virginia Tech Hokies (-4.0) @ Syracuse Orange
Logan: Another one that almost gets to philosophical for me. Is the Orange a fruit, or is it just the color orange. If its the Turkeys against an orange fruit then the Hokies should win easy (unless they choke on the fruit). But if the Turkey’s are up against the concept of the color orange I just don’t see how they can win… I dunno, I’m probably overthinking this one. Turkey should be able to eat orange.
Logan’s pick: Hokies
Georgia Southern Eagles @ South Alabama Jaguars (-6.0)
Logan: Eagles against Jaguars. Eagles can be pretty dangerous. They can fly and have incredibly sharp talons. Eagles are more scavengers, and not much for fighting but they can really tear animals up. Jaguars get this one at home so that gives them a slight advantage, but I just don’t see how they overcome the Eagles’ ability to fly.
Logan’s pick: Eagles
#4 Ohio State Buckeyes (-4.0) @ #3 Penn State Nittany Lions
Logan: Ok, lets look at the actual mascots here. Brutus the buckeye versus whatever the fluffy lion is for Penn State. I think both mascots are surprisingly strong, just look at all the pushups they do. The Nittany Lion does get this game at home, and has an extra limb in a tail that it could use to its advantage. I think the Nittany Lion should be able to edge this one out.
Logan’s pick: Nittany Lion
