After Cuse exposed a few weaknesses in the Yellow Jackets’ armor last week, they responded in just about the best way possible, completely demolishing the VMI Keydets 59-7.
In a game like this, there’s nobody that really doesn’t play well, and that was mostly the case today. The only number that might be slightly concerning is that running back Jamal Haynes could not find much success against a pretty bad VMI defense. He finished the game with just 22 yards on 7 carries.
Haynes King handled things just fine through the air hitting 17 of 22 targets for 275 yards and 3 touchdowns. Once again, the Georgia Tech offensive line kept Haynes King upright all game.
This game gave us the opportunity to see some of what Georgia Tech has stashed in the depth chart. Notably, we saw the debuts of true freshmen running back Tre Maddox and quarterback Aaron Philo.
Maddox led the Yellow Jackets in rushing with 53 yards and a touchdown on 9 carries. Philo appeared in one drive, going 3 for 5 with 48 yards. He made some particularly impressive throws, including this one.
You really can’t ask for anymore from a quarterback. He narrowly avoids a sack, catches himself on the way down to keep the play alive, and then heaves it downfield for a massive gain. That’s a play that a lot of very experienced players don’t have a chance to make. To see Philo—a true freshman—make it, well, I think there are exciting times for him coming at Georgia Tech.
To be frank, you couldn’t ask for a much better game. Sure, I could nitpick about third downs, but I won’t. Georgia Tech came in and played exactly as well as you would hope they would against an FCS team that is bad. I’ll call that a good day.
Go Jackets!
