Tech moves to 3-0 with two freshmen leading the stat sheet in scoring
ATLANTA — Georgia Tech took down the University of West Georgia at home tonight, outscoring the Wolves 88-53. The overarching theme of this game was UWG turning the ball over and Georgia Tech capitalizing (most of the time) on these mistakes, scoring 27 points off forced turnovers and 11 points in transition.
The first quarter was SLOW, with only ten points scored on either end of the floor through the first six minutes. Of the Jackets’s 19 points in the first, freshmen Dani Carnegie and Zoesha “Chit-Chat” Smith scored most of them. The Jackets settled into a rhythm and took control of the game as the second half began despite still struggling to score from outside the three. The teams entered the locker room at the end of the first half, with Tech leading 38-20, and when they exited, UWG turned the ball over on their first and second plays of the half. Toni Morgan and Zoesha Smith were each able to capitalize on the Wolves’s turnovers with a bucket a piece. The Jackets outscored the Wolves 29-17 in the third quarter thanks to some moves inside from Kayla Blackshear and Kara Dunn and outside shooting fortune finally turning. Carnegie and Smith sunk back-to-back threes, buoying their stat lines to lead the team in scoring. The fourth quarter was more of the same. UWG picked up some good buckets here and there and jumped into a man press, but it was too little too late. The Jackets won 88-53, with almost every player who saw the floor recording at least one score. Kayla Blackshear led the Jackets on the board with nine rebounds and 13 points. Kara Dunn posted 12 points herself and four boards.
Overall, I think this was a solid game that showcased a very young and talented team. I have a lot of hope for these freshmen and their future with this program. The Jackets will be back in action Sunday against u(sic)GA at 2:00 pm. Let’s all pray that the curse of Carson Beck translates to the women’s basketball team. THWg!
