Which Jacket should have the better Olympics: Jose Alvarado or Julia Bergmann?
DressHerInWhiteAndGold: When our players become (unionized) employees of the Institute eventually; how do we feel about writing the job description to NOT include: finite math, anything sciency, labs, and any other course outside of basket weaving, power tool technology and Rec Arts?
Logan: So basically pay them to play here and don’t make them go to class? Kind of defeats the point of going to college. I’m sure there’s a joke or some underlying sarcasm here that’s going over my head; my take is part of why you come to Tech is to get an education and just because we pay players now that doesn’t mean players shouldn’t go to class. That’s my rose tinted view at least.
Jake: Just want to concur with Logan here. I got a lot out of my college experience, and regardless of the compensation status of the athletes, getting an education is important, and I would certainly hope that stays a key part of the equation.
Ben: That might happen at other schools, but that is never going to happen at Georgia Tech. RT everything Logan said.
Anuj Bhyravabhotla: At some point, can we please do a postmortem on why Dave Patenaude’s and Chip Long’s playcalling were such garbage whereas Buster Faulkner actually could put together a competent game plan/script?
Jack: I’m no expert on this, but I think there’s something to be said with Chip never having a fully prepared squad knowing what we know of how poorly G**** ran the team behind the scenes. Not totally his fault, but also there’s probably a reason why Key felt it was best to move on from him.
Logan: Based on Nebraska’s performance last year it’s a possibility that G**** forcing us to keep Jeff Sims as starting QB impacted how the offense performed. If I could find more information I’d be interested in doing a behind the scenes of what exactly went on during 404’s entire tenure. The more I learn the more I’m just mystified as to how we paid these people to run our program into the ground.
Ben: I think Davey P and Chip Long were definitely limited in what they could do. Prior to joining Collins, Davey P was super into things like incorporating the option into his offense. If I remember correctly, he even ran some flexbone at one stop. But when Collins came to Georgia Tech, the powers that be wanted the complete opposite of Paul Johnson. For better or worse (definitely worse), that’s what they got.
BillOBrienEnthusiast: I read the article about the Flex defense on some other website. I had some problems with the triple option, as can be seen by my name, but a different argument is that the defense was always a bigger problem. Is it worth it for GT to roll the dice on something like the Flex D? Or is this a long term issue that just needs time and the right head coach to solve?
Logan: I have little understanding of Flex D as a whole, but it essentially sounds like a system based around not using an D-line and stacking box with linebackers and CBs while shifting coverage looks as applicable. Kind of like a triangle defense/offense except in football. While the Flex -D does fit our personnel group I think it would be difficult to run without players or coaches who have experience running it. The flex-D sounds like a fun experiment, but not one I’m in a rush to employ even with our recent defensive struggles.
Ben: I’m no expert on it, but I don’t know that the base scheme on defense means as much as it does on offense. Like, running a 4-3 isn’t going to give you some type of advantage over running a 3-4. I understand it’s more complicated than that, and with a Flex D, I assume that there’s something cooked up into the scheme that helps it stand out, but I don’t think it’s any kind of magic recipe for success or anything.
acedarney: Thoughts on the new College Football 2025?
Jack: I have no doubt we’re going to have an absolute blast playing the game. I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a few bugs here and there, but that’s to be expected for what’s effectively a brand new game. Not that college football needs another thing to add to the daily chatter, but I think this universally loved part of the community is reintroducing itself at a great time when the rest of college football is in a very chaotic state.
Logan: I haven’t played Madden for about 6 years. I’m excited for all the features and the style the game seems to ooze. I’m looking forward to the game, and to all the posts of people meme-ing about their play experience.
Jake: I am terrible at sports video games, and I rarely have time to play them in general, but I extremely eager to play this one. It looks like a lot of true care has gone into capturing the things that make college football unique, like traditions and setting, and as someone who doesn’t generally love the pro game, that is my biggest draw.
Ben: Looks intriguing, but I don’t have anything to play it on and won’t be getting anything to play it on anytime soon.
DressHerInWhiteAndGold: Please power rank favorite Tom Hardy roles. Gracias
Logan: I am by no means an expert on Tom Hardy, but of what I’ve seen this is how I’d rank:
- Warrior
- Bronson
- Mad Max
- Dunkirk
- Inception
That’s all I’ve really seen of him.
DressHerInWhiteAndGold: Which Jacket should have the better Olympics:
Jose Alvarado or Julia Bergmann?
Jack: This largely comes down to what the draw looks like in basketball for Puerto Rico, and it’s not good. They drew the United States and Serbia, which means they face the likely gold medal winners and the Nikola Jokic led Serbs. That’s about as tough as it could get save for maybe Canada. Brazil on the other hand is a verified volleyball powerhouse. While the United States won the Tokyo gold in women’s volleyball, the Brazilians should make it further in that tournament compared to Puerto Rico in basketball. I will have an article coming soon giving the full download on these two and Chris Eubanks!
Logan: I expect Alvarado to put up some nice personal stats, but as Jack points out I don’t expect Puerto Rico to make it very far in the tournament. Julia is likely to medal along with the rest of the Brazil team, so I have to think she will have a “better” Olympics overall.
Jake: Completely agree. The expectations for the two teams are just so different. I think Jose can have some fun, but that Brazil expects Bergmann and her compatriots to challenge for a medal.
