The honor’s all mine
I’m sitting at Tech Green writing this, quite humbled by the fact I get to be the next site manager/editor in chief of From The Rumble Seat. I’ve spent my entire waking life addicted to sports. Playing, watching, writing, discussing, cheering, arguing, studying, reading, all the adverbs that you could use to describe engaging with a sport, I’ve done it. It was a mid-college realization at the Technique that I had when I found out the sports writing thing was something I was going to really enjoy and want to do. Part of me wishes I had gone to school for journalism instead of business, but that would’ve meant never becoming a Ramblin’ Wreck. Sliding doors, etc.
I remain thankful each day that I got to experience five wild years as a student at Georgia Tech, followed immediately up with becoming a staff writer here at FTRS. Not everyone gets to run a followed sports website who wants to. I’m one of the lucky few who gets to do that about their own school and a place they genuinely care about. Between hosting Scions of the Southland, bringing game by game coverage of Georgia Tech volleyball and women’s basketball, and attending the games of nearly every other sport on campus, contributing to this site has been a labor of love that I hope will continue for a long time and that others will join along for.
Now, what to expect in a Tankersley to Purdy transition? Lots of the same, and hopefully even better coverage across the board. I will still be hosting Scions of the Southland weekly with Jake and Akshay. I will still be the point person for Volleyball and Women’s Basketball. We’ll be actively looking for more and more writers to keep From the Rumble Seat what it is as long as we can. The staff we have already are all incredible people, from the old guard to the newbies like me and the Maggies Doster and Scroggs, and I hope to expand our group of people who truly love Georgia Tech and want to see it thrive. We will do our best to uphold a standard of quality that matches what the world knows Georgia Tech graduates are capable of. I want people that read and listen to From The Rumble Seat to be people that always leave the website or podcast knowing they are reading genuine, thoughtful coverage of a place we all love.
I firmly believe Georgia Tech is a place worth covering and celebrating. It already is one of the best institutions globally for learning, career advancement, and the progression of society. The people that come to Tech aren’t here to bullshit their way through life. They find purpose and do what they can to master themselves to become indispensable parts of society. For me, I hope in one way I do that is by being one of the most reliable people for cohesive and constructive thought about Georgia Tech sports. I’ll never be a Kelly Quinlan or Chad Bishop that’s on top of every little detail as this is not my day job, but having been a Georgia Tech fan for going on nine years and following nearly every sport in that time, I know I can continue to provide quality coverage that our readers know is reliable, thoughtful information. Imagine getting that in today’s media landscape!
We’re all here because we love Georgia Tech. It holds us together and makes this website and the group behind it special. We hope to do this in perpetuity.
Georgia Tech sports is in a period of reclaiming its stature as one of the most important places in country. Let’s all enjoy it together, shall we?
To hell with muthaeffin goddamn georgia,
Jack Purdy
P.S. apply to join the staff! Seriously!
