Georgia Tech has made a change to its coaching staff after Saturday’s 21-6 loss at Virginia Tech.
Special teams and cornerbacks associate head coach Ricky Brumfield is no longer with the program. The team announced the news on Tuesday.
“Georgia Tech associate head coach for special teams Ricky Brumfield is no longer with the program,” a Georgia Tech statement read, via On3.
Brumfield didn’t make the trip to Blacksburg for Saturday’s game, which raised some eyebrows. When Yellow Jackets head coach Brent Key was asked about it, he didn’t say much.
“Yeah, he didn’t make the trip and that’s all that’s all the information I have,” Key said.
Well, we now know why he didn’t make the trip to Lane Stadium a few days ago.
The Yellow Jackets special teams have struggled this season. They came into Saturday’s game only 6-of-12 on the season in field goals and also rank 121st in kickoff return defense and 107th in net punting.
The only thing they do right is blocking kicks and fans saw that on display when they blocked a Hokies field goal during the game.
They’re hoping that this change sparks their special teams units for the rest of the season. The Yellow Jackets are currently 5-4 overall and face another tough test after their bye week on November 9 against the No. 5 Miami Hurricanes.
After that, they’ll end the season with a game against the NC State Wolfpack and the Georgia Bulldogs.
