In a move seen as a surprise by some, Georgia linebacker Damon Wilson has announced that he will be entering the transfer portal. Wilson served as the primary back up to senior outside linebacker Chaz Chambless during 2024. He saw action in all 14 of Georgia’s games, tallying 20 tackles, 5.5 tackles for loss, and 3 sacks.
Wilson was a likely starter in 2025 as he is one of only three outside linebackers returning along with junior Gabe Harris and redshirt freshman Quintavious Johnson. The Bulldogs did sign a trio of highly rated recruits at the position: five stars Isaiah Gibson and Darren Ikinnagbon, and four star Chase Linton.
It is precisely the lack of veteran depth at the position that makes me wonder whether Wilson‘s portal entry is more about negotiating strength, and less about actually looking for a new home. In this day and age, players are acutely aware of their NIL negotiating position, and Wilson is in a fairly strong posture. I wouldn’t be entirely surprised to see him end up back in Athens before all is said and done. If he doesn’t return, I’d look for the staff to be active in the transfer portal to replace him. Given the first round NFL picks produced by UGA under Kirby Smart’s leadership it’s an appealing destination for players focused on a pro football future. Until later…
