The Georgia Diamond Dawgs have concluded another undefeated week of play as they have extended their win streak to a record 15 games. The 15-game win streak is the longest in school history since the 1908 team. Let’s get into this past week of play.
The Dawgs began their week of play against High Point University. Georgia’s bats were alive all throughout this one, scoring in five different innings. The Dawgs pitching staff also held up, allowing just four runs, helping Georgia kick-off their week with an 8-4 win. Ryan Black and Slate Alford led the way offensively, Black went 3-for-4 at the plate with a home run, double, and two RBIs. Alford went 2-for-5 with a long ball of his own and three RBIs.
Following their win against HPU, the Panthers of Georgia State made their way to Foley Field to try to knock off the red-hot Dawgs. This one was nothing but offense as both pitching staffs struggled throughout. Though the Dawgs gave up nine runs in a dreadful third inning, Georgia’s bats refused to cool off, putting up 16 runs through six innings. Fortunately for the Dawgs, their pitching staff was able to hold strong from innings 4-9, eventually earning the 16-10 win. Multiple Dawgs led the way offensively as Robbie Burnett launched two home runs while Tre Phelps, Ryland Zaborowski, and Kolby Branch also had home runs on the day.
After extending their win streak to 12 games with wins over HPU and Georgia State, the Dawgs were now ready for a three-game set against Columbia. Game one took place Friday afternoon and the Dawgs were nothing short of dominant, earning the 14-5 win. Ryland Zaborowski crushed two homers on the day while Robbie Burnett, Tre Phelps, and Devin Obee also added homers of their own.
There wouldn’t be much of a difference in Game two in terms of dominance by the Dawgs. Georgia’s bats would put up 16 runs for the second time in the week, cruising to a 16-6 win. Ryland Zaborowski and Robbie Burnett both continued their monster weeks at the plate as Zaborowski put together another two homer performance with Burnett hitting another of his own.
Georgia concluded their series against Columbia yesterday afternoon in what was a much tougher battle than games one and two. Georgia would start things off with a blistering first inning, putting seven runs up on the board. A few innings later Columbia put together a big inning of their own, bringing six across the plate to draw closer at 7-6. The Dawgs would tack on a couple of more runs in the sixth to extend their lead to 9-6. Georgia’s bullpen would hold strong in the later half of the game, allowing just one more Columbia run in the ninth to earn the series sweep with a 9-7 win. To no surprise, both Ryland Zaborowski and Robbie Burnett were dominant at the plate and led the way offensively as both guys crushed homers.
The Dawgs will spend the day resting up before taking on East Tennessee State on Tuesday. Following that one, Georgia will begin their highly anticipated SEC schedule, starting with a three-game set against the Kentucky Wildcats at Foley Field.
