The Diamond Dawgs are riding high and perhaps a little exhausted following this past week’s slate of games where we saw the Dawgs earn three walk-off wins to extend their win streak to ten games. Let’s get into it.
The Dawgs kicked off their week of play in Atlanta, taking on the Panthers of Georgia State. The Panthers started quickly in this one, holding a 3-0 lead until the sixth inning. By the time the sixth inning rolled around, Georgia finally got their bats going and cruised to a 7-3 win with all of their offensive runs taking place in the sixth and seventh inning. Tre Phelps led the charge at the plate, going 2-for-4 with a 2-run homer.

Following their win against the Panthers, the Dawgs returned to Foley Field for a four-game set against Florida Gulf-Coast, starting on Friday. Game one of this series was filled with plenty of offensive fireworks with both teams putting up a lot of runs. FGCU held a 5-0 lead at one point in this one but the Dawgs would battle back and tie things up at 7-7 in the sixth. Daniel Jackson had himself a day at the plate, going 4-for-5 with two homers.

Both teams continued to score runs late in the game but the Georgia bats would prevail, with the Dawgs earning the 10-9 win on a walk-off error at the plate.

The Diamond Dawgs and FGCU returned to Foley on Saturday to gear up for a double-header for games two and three of the series. Game two was much more one-sided than any of the other games in this series, with Georgia dominating at the plate and on the mound for the 10-0 win. The Dawgs had the long ball working in game two as Slate Alford, Robbie Burnett, Daniel Jackson, and Kolby Branch all had home runs on the day.

Game three would prove to be another tough battle for the Dawgs, as the Dawgs were down 6-0 following the first inning. The Diamond Dawgs would chip away at the deficit with the long ball throughout the game as Tre Phelps and Ryland Zaborowski combined for three home runs, two of which were from the bat of Zaborowski.

Things would eventually be tied up in the seventh following Tre Phelps’ two-run homer. Both offenses would remain quiet in the eighth and ninth inning, leading to some extra inning baseball. The Dawgs’ pitching staff kept FGCU’s offense quiet in the top half of the tenth, setting up another walk-off victory for Georgia. The Dawgs would do just that, as Slate Alford scored Daniel Jackson on an RBI single into Center Field to give the Dawgs the series win.

Georgia concluded their week of play yesterday in the series finale against FGCU. Both offenses were quiet in this one as things were scoreless going into the sixth. FGCU would put together a big inning, taking a 3-0 lead into the bottom half of the inning. It wasn’t until the bottom of the seventh that we saw the Dawgs get their bats going as Tre Phelps scored Nolan McCarthy on an RBI single, bringing things closer at 3-1. Georgia would tack on another run in the bottom of the eighth, but would still be down 3-2 heading into the bottom of the ninth with their nine-game win streak once again in jeopardy. Fortunately for the Dawgs, Ryan Black was not ready to let that happen. Black launched a two-run walk-off homer over the right field fence, scoring Tre Phelps in the process and extending Georgia’s win streak to an even ten games.

Georgia will now get a couple of days rest without any worry of traveling as they will remain at Foley Field for this upcoming week’s slate of games. The Dawgs will take on High Point University on Tuesday before taking on Georgia State on Wednesday. Following those games, Georgia will begin a three-game set on Friday against Columbia University. That’s all for this week’s edition of Diamond Dawg Weekly Recap. As always, Go Dawgs!!!
