Charlie Condon continues to obliterate college pitching.
The Georgia slugger is batting .458/.567/1.102 during his second season. He’s crushed an NCAA-leading 32 home runs in 46 games.
Condon, who hasn’t gone more than three games without touching them all this season, has cleared the fences in six straight contests. He’s two-thirds on the way to matching a college milestone.
Last year, Florida two-way star Jac Caglianone tied Tyler Bosetti’s record by homering in nine straight games. Ken Griffey Jr., Don Mattingly, and Dale Long share the MLB milestone at eight each.
Condon has already made history as Georgia’s single-season and all-time (57) home run leader.
“It’s amazing,” Condon said last month after setting the school milestones, per MLB.com’s Kenny Van Doren. “This is what I’ve worked really hard for. … For it to pay off in a group like this, I just love being able to contribute with such a great group of good guys and all that good stuff. It means a lot. We’re not done yet, but we’re just going to keep on rolling, and hopefully, there’s a couple more coming.”
Oklahoma State’s Pete Incaviglia holds the NCAA’s single-season benchmark with 48 home runs. Condon is two long balls away from setting the highest tally since 2000.
Condon could chase another record from Incaviglia, who boasts the NCAA’s best single-season slugging percentage (1.140).
Though he joined Georgia as a preferred walk-on, Condon is now the presumptive favorite to go No. 1 in July’s MLB Draft. He’ll look to keep re-writing the record books before potentially beginning his professional career with the Cleveland Guardians.
Condon will try to keep his home run streak alive as Georgia attempts to finish a series sweep over Vanderbilt on Sunday afternoon.
