A Georgia football player has decided to retire from playing football.
Tight end Pearce Spurlin has retired due to a heart issue, according to head coach Kirby Smart.
“He’s going to have to take a medical disqualification,” Smart said. “He will no longer be able to play football.”
This is a condition that the school has known about for quite a while and one that they have closely monitored.
Spurlin appeared in six games during the 2023 season and compiled three receptions for 60 yards. That season was his only one at the collegiate level since he was a freshman.
Before he committed to Georgia, Spurlin was a four-star recruit and the No. 19 recruit in Florida in the 2023 class, per 247Sports composite rankings. He was also the No. 76 overall recruit in the country.
He played his high school football at South Walton High School in Florida.
Georgia now has five tight ends heading into the 2024 season as the program tries to return to the College Football Playoff. The Bulldogs just missed out on a berth this past season after losing to the Alabama Crimson Tide in the SEC Championship Game.
