Kirby Smart addressed the latest legal situation within his Georgia football program.
Colbie Young was arrested Tuesday morning on misdemeanor charges of battery and assault of an unborn child. The wide receiver allegedly had a physical altercation with his pregnant ex-girlfriend. According to ESPN’s
Mark Schlabach, police took her to an Athens hospital from Young’s apartment after observing bruises and discolorations on her lower chest and redness on her side.
Per The Athletic’s Seth Emerson, Smart said Wednesday that the team is indefinitely suspending Young “until his legal situation is resolved.”
“We can’t really comment any further on the specifics of it, but had a good meeting with him this morning,” Smart said, per the Atlanta Journal-Constitution‘s Connor Riley. “We’re committed to continuing to educate our players and do the best job we can of making sure they understand the serious nature of these incidents. It’s very unfortunate, but we want to be responsible in decision-making on and off the field. This is obviously a really tough situation.”
According to the police report, the victim said she went to Young’s apartment to discuss their relationship. The 20-year-old woman said Young used “derogatory” and “demeaning” terms during a heated argument and “grabbed her left arm near her biceps and triceps and physically pulled her out of his room.”
Young went back into his room and shut the door. When she answered a friend’s call, he “came out and grabbed her from behind.”
“She said that he picked her up and began to squeeze her torso and abdomen very hard,” the police report said. “She said she felt like he was trying to harm her.”
Young is the seventh Georgia football player to be arrested since March. Players have also been involved in at least 24 driving incidents since offensive lineman Devin Willock and recruiting analyst Chandler LeCroy died in a car crash while racing in January 2023.
