Georgia Bulldogs head coach Kirby Smart let his emotions get the best of him on Saturday night.
The Bulldogs topped the Mississippi State Bulldogs, 41-31, on Saturday evening. Georgia improved to 5-1 on the year, as Smart’s team continues to rebound from its close loss to Alabama at the end of September. But emotions were high on Saturday night and Smart appeared to let his temper get the best of him. While going after an official or an assistant coahc, Smart appeared to shove Mississippi State quarterback Michael Van Buren.
Video of the incident went viral.
Smart claims that he didn’t see the quarterback and he was simply going after his defensive coordinator, Glenn Schumann.
“I think I was going after Schumann,” Kirby Smart said postgame. “I was trying to get Schumann’s attention. We were trying to change personnel. I think it’s the play they came over to our sideline. And I’m trying to get Schumann’s attention. But, no, I don’t really remember it.”
Van Buren was confused by what happened.
“I’m not sure what that was. I was must trying to play my game. I didn’t really see it,” he said.
Smart’s explanation is understandable, but it’s still a pretty tough look. Coaches need to do their best to keep their emotions in check on the sideline.
