Georgia head coach Kirby Smart is suspending players for driving violations.
The program has had a problem with driving incidents for well over a year and Smart is trying to fix it. Players are also being fined by the program’s NIL Collective, per Smart.
“Our Classic City Collective for over a year has been substantially fining guys for those things,” Smart told Seth Emerson of The Athletic. “That’s not something that’s new. That’s something that’s been ongoing outside of my jurisdiction that they decided to implement and have done to a considerable amount.”
Two Georgia players were arrested on reckless driving charges last week, including star linebacker Smael Mondon Jr. Mondon Jr. was arrested last Wednesday on charges of reckless driving and racing before getting released Thursday morning.
Before that, offensive lineman Bo Hughley was arrested last Tuesday for reckless driving before being released from jail later that night.
Per DawgNation.com, since January 2023, Georgia has had 24 driving driving citations issued to players. It’s an issue that Smart wants to clean up for good, as he’s received extensive criticism for the problem.
Georgia will get its 2024 season underway on August 31 against ACC powerhouse Clemson. Kickoff will be at Noon ET.
