Since 2017, Georgia has been one of the dominant programs in college football.
However, during that time, there is one opponent that has particularly vexed the Bulldogs: Alabama. Following last night’s 41-34 loss to the Crimson Tide in Tuscaloosa, Georgia is 1-6 against Alabama and 88-6 against everyone else since 2017.
Smart was asked about his program’s struggles against ‘Bama during his postgame presser Saturday, and his explanation was straightforward.
“What’s everybody else’s record against them? Anybody got one better than 1-6?” Smart said. “That’s played them six times? I don’t think so. I think they’ve got really good players, they’ve got a great program. I’ve got an immense amount of respect for ’em. They do a great job.
“I mean, Nick’s recruited good players, Kalen’s got good players in here. It’s a tough battle. Two of them have been here. And they’ve been tough, they’ve been really tough battles. So, a lot of credit to those guys and a lot of respect for them.”
To be fair, Smart’s lone win over Alabama came in the national championship game three seasons ago. If you’re only going to beat a team once in seven tries, that’s a pretty good time to do it.
On Saturday, Georgia overcame a 28-0 first half deficit to take a 34-33 lead with 2:31 remaining, only to have Jalen Milroe connect with freshman star wide receiver Ryan Williams on a 75-yard touchdown pass 13 seconds later.
We would not mind seeing these teams meet again down the road, either in the SEC Championship Game or the expanded College Football Playoff.
