It’s the first day of the rest of your college football season. And if you’re like most of Bulldog Nation you awoke to find the sun a little less shiny, the coffee a little less robust, and the bacon…..well, bacon is just as awesome as it was before Saturday night. But a lot of other stuff has lost its shine.
Obviously a lot of the negative attention from Saturday night is focused on Carson Beck, whose 12 interceptions is the most in the SEC and tied for the most in the country. For his part Beck seemed pretty sanguine after the loss.
That doesn’t really bother me, as I don’t see a great alternative. Carson Beck has played excellent football before, even at times this season. He was under pressure for most of the night, and Mike Bobo never really found a way to scheme up anything that got him going, thanks in part to a porous offensive line. There’s not a whole lot Beck can say at this point that we don’t all know. He’s got to take better care of the ball and be more accurate when he gets the chance to sling it. It’s not hard to say. But it’s fiendishly hard to do, apparently.
In future quarterbacking news, Georgia will play host this weekend to one of the top signal callers in the class of 2025. While the Bulldogs already have a commitment from Ohioan Ryan Montgomery, Segapolutele is perhaps the fastest rising star in this year’s class. Assuming Georgia will lose at least one transfer from the current QB room (by the by, I think that’s likely), adding another solid competitor to the room can’t hurt.
The Bulldog players notably experienced their first field storming this weekend, and confirmed that it stinks. Will the experience of having thousands of gleeful Ole Miss fans careen around and into them affect how seriously this team takes its preparations going forward? Who knows. But I think we can all agree that type of motivation never should have been necessary in the first place.
On the hardwood Mike White’s Hoop Hounds remained undefeated Sunday by pulling away for a 92-64 victory over Texas Southern. Mount St. Mary’s transfer Dakota Leffew led all scorers with 23, making him the third Bulldog in three contests (an exhibition and two regular season non-conference games) to lead the team in scoring. If you’re looking for a sign of progress this season, it may be that the Red and Black can lean on whoever has the hot hand rather than relying on one or two superstars, and being shut down if those guys aren’t hot that night. Only time will tell. Until later….
