Welcome to SEC play, Bulldog fans. The preliminaries are over for the moment, and one of the toughest conference schedules in Bulldog history beckons, beginning this weekend with the Kentucky Wildcats.
Jeff Dantzler has a nice early look at the Fightin’ Stoopses up over at Bulldawg Illustrated. I agree with Jeff, don’t count on the same hapless ‘Cats who got run over by South Carolina to show up at Kroger Field this week.
That being said, the Bluegrass State Felines looked pretty awful over the weekend in a 31-6 drubbing at the hands (claws? spurs?) of Shane Beamer’s Gamecocks. Of particular concern was the passing game, the statistics from which are quite something:
Kentucky QB Brock Vandagriff today vs South Carolina
• (3-10) 30 Passing yards 1 INT
• -29 rushing yards
• 1 Total yard pic.twitter.com/xw0ly9Qd1I— NCAAF Nation (@NCAAFNation247) September 7, 2024
Sweet Mabel at the opera, that’s a stat line for the ages.
The biggest culprit? A porous offensive line that rarely gave Vandagriff time to get his hands on the ball, much less find an open receiver. It’s a good thing for Kentucky that Kirby Smart and Glenn Schumann have so much trouble dialing up successful quarterback pressure, huh?
Some of you may have noticed we didn’t have our occasional “What was Coach ___ Thinking?” post-game post on Sunday. Truth be told, that was partially because it feels like punching down after a game against an FCS opponent. But in this instance specifically, Tennessee Tech’s Bobby Wilder is a notably standup guy who had only nice things to say about Georgia and Kirby Smart:
Competing against #1 @GeorgiaFootball and coach @KirbySmartUGA was an honor today. IMO he’s the leader.
Hate losing, love how we competed.#WingsUp #AimHigh pic.twitter.com/Fo1YJOi3sp— Bobby Wilder (@CoachWilder353) September 8, 2024
To my fellow dog lovers, what a treat to meet the greatest mascot of all time Uga.@GeorgiaFootball is well protected. pic.twitter.com/O0kGS2x7Uq

Wilder is well-known in coaching circles, in part for his years at Old Dominion where he revived the football team that is currently one of the most dangerous an FBS team can foolishly schedule for a paycheck game (ask South Carolina). Here’s hoping he finds renewed success in Cookeville.
Moving forward, it looks like Georgia will go to Lexington with a relatively intact roster. Postgame Coach Smart provided positive injury news on Oscar Delp and Nate Frazier among others, though it sounds like Mykel Williams remains the major contributor most likely to remain on the shelf this week. We’re going to probably say it all season but it bears repeating early and often: the team that wins the national title this year may just be the one among the top three or four that gets to the title game with its roster intact.
Finally, your moment of Bulldog zen. In case you missed it, please enjoy this moment in which Drew Bobo sends a Tennessee Tech defender on a one way trip to night-night land.
Has anyone checked on this man that Drew Bobo sent to the shadow realm yesterday? I know @George85915286 was smiling on this one. pic.twitter.com/swCepwlV0w
