Saturday night’s game between Alabama and Georgia was an instant classic — as we’ve come to expect when the two SEC powers meet.
After going down 28-0 in the game’s first 17 minutes, Kirby Smart‘s Bulldogs fought back to take a 34-33 lead late in the fourth before even more chaos ensued.
A Ryan Williams touchdown and a last-minute goal line interception allowed the Tide to escape Bryant-Denny with a 41-34 win. And ESPN’s Paul Finebaum believes it might just be the best game he’s ever seen in his four-plus decades covering the Southeastern Conference.
“I’ve covered the SEC for more than 40 years,” Finebaum told “SportsCenter.” “You can see that on my face right here, but I believe that is the best college football game in the SEC I have seen during all those years. I know we often get hung up on being prisoners of the moment but that is an exaggeration to say that we are in this case.”
“You saw the lead. You saw the comeback. You saw the ending. It had everything you could have, including the fact that we have this rivalry in the SEC, two of the best teams in the entire country who may or may not play again. It had absolutely everything,” he continued.
“What Kirby Smart said is correct, that is true of both schools, nobody left anything on the field. They put it all out there and if you ask who’s the better team, the better team won, but next time it could be different.”
It’s certainly a game folks who saw it will remember for a long, long time.
Now we can only hope for a potential rematch later down the line in the SEC championship or potentially the College Football Playoff.
