ESPN’s Rece Davis has already unveiled one of his top predictions for the College Football Playoff. This season will mark the first year that a 12-team field competes for the national championship.
During the latest episode of the “College GameDay Podcast,” Davis unveiled his pick for the No. 1 overall seed in the 12-team format.
As of today, Davis is predicting that Georgia will be the No. 1 seed in the CFP. However, he acknowledged that it’s a risky pick since the Bulldogs have a pretty tough schedule.
“Georgia has a much, much more difficult schedule than Texas. They have to go to Texas to play,” Davis said, via On3. “Their schedule is difficult enough, especially the road schedule, that they can play well and lose. They don’t have to show up flat necessarily because they have some challenges but a lot of confidence in this team.”
For that reason alone, Davis is labeling Georgia as his “anti-schedule pick” for the CFP.
“Georgia is the anti-schedule pick. This is the belief that, if you are good enough, you’ll win the games anyway. If you are powerful enough, you’ll win the games anyway,” Davis explained. “Georgia has to go to Alabama, to Texas, to Ole Miss, and they’ve got Tennessee at home. Yet I’m still defaulting to who I think the best team is.”
From a talent standpoint, Georgia has a lot to like, especially with Carson Beck leading the offense. The real question is just whether or not Kirby Smart’s program will be able to get through its gauntlet of a schedule.
The Bulldogs will kick off their 2024 season with an immediate test against the Clemson Tigers.
