Two Georgia football players were arrested separately for reckless driving charges this week.
According to UGASports.com’s Anthony Dasher, linebacker Smael Mondon and offensive lineman Bo Hughley were each arrested on misdemeanor charges.
Athens-Clarke County police arrested Mondon on Wednesday night, charging him with reckless driving and racing on highway streets. University of Georgia police charged Hugley with reckless driving and failure to maintain a proper lane following a single-car accident on Tuesday night.
Each player was released shortly after his arrest after posting bonds totaling $26.
A former five-star recruit, Mondon tallied 68 tackles and three sacks in his junior year at Georgia. He registered eight tackles in an SEC Championship Game loss to Alabama.
Hughley redshirted last season after joining Kirby Smart’s program as a local four-star recruit. The 6-foot-7, 280-pound offensive tackle has yet to play for the Bulldogs.
These arrests continue a troubling trend of driving incidents within Georgia’s football program.
In March, running back Trevor Etienne was charged with a DUI and other misdemeanors after driving 80 mph in a 50 mph zone. Two months later, wide receiver Sacovie White was arrested for reckless driving after allegedly driving the wrong way on a one-way street.
These cases occurred a year after Georgia player Devin Willock and staffer Chandler LeCroy died in a cash crash. They were allegedly racing star defender Jalen Carter.
Following White’s arrest, Chip Towers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution noted 18 traffic arrests within the Georgia football program since the start of 2023. That startling total increased to 20 this week.
