A coach on Kirby Smart’s staff has emerged as a top candidate for the Georgia State head-coaching vacancy.
Per Bruce Feldman and Seth Emerson of The Athletic, Georgia running backs coach Dell McGee is a strong candidate for the gig.
McGee has coached under Smart for the last eight seasons and has been one of his best recruiters. Before he went to Georgia, he coached at Georgia Southern from 2014-15 and was the program’s running backs coach.
As a player, he played professionally from 1996-2001. Before that, he played collegiately at Auburn from 1992-95.
Georgia State is trying to find a replacement for Shawn Elliott after he left to become South Carolina’s tight ends coach.
Elliott coached the program for seven seasons (2017-23) and finished with a 42-49 record. He also led the program to a bowl game in five of those seasons.
Before that, he was the interim head coach for South Carolina in 2015 after Steve Spurrier resigned. In six games, he had a 1-5 record.
Georgia Tech offensive coordinator Buster Faulkner is also a strong candidate for the gig, per Feldman and Emerson.
