Tonight’s Sugar Bowl matchup between Georgia and Notre Dame has been postponed following the tragic attack early this morning that killed 10 and wounded at least 35 more.
Orleans Parish district attorney Jason Williams told ABC News moments ago that the game will likely be played on Thursday instead of Wednesday night. Sugar Bowl CEO Jeff Hundley confirmed at a 2:00 pm press conference with other officials that the game will be delayed “24 hours” by agreement of the city, law enforcement, ESPN, and the schools.
“As of right now”, Williams said, “it’s only being postponed one day.” Williams’ statement seems to leave justifiable wiggle room for the game to be played at another date, which makes sense in this sort of dynamic situation. The Georgia Bulldogs, for example, remain stuck in their hotel under a shelter in place order as the investigation proceeds. Also, I would expect that both teams would prefer to play a little earlier than 8:45 pm if possible as the winner will now have a playoff semi-final game at 7:30 next Thursday night against Penn State.
We’ll continue to follow this story and bring you additional updates as they become available.
5:30 EDIT: The kickoff initially set for 8:45 pm tomorrow evening has been bumped up to 4:00 pm. That should at least allow the winner to get home and sleep in their own beds Thursday night before beginning preparations for Penn State.
