Today marks the opening of the spring transfer portal window, and the ‘Dawgs didn’t have to wait long for their first entrant. Junior running back Branson Robinson entered the portal Wednesday morning according to multiple sources.
Robinson came to Athens as the #4 ranked tailback in the class of 2022 out of Madison, Mississippi. He arrived as one of the most physically ready freshmen in recent memory, but injuries held him back over the course of his three seasons in Athens. Robinson played in just 18 of 43 games during his three seasons at Georgia, totaling 403 yards and six touchdowns on 93 carries.
Robinson appeared bound for greatness during his 2022 freshman campaign, during which he rushed for 330 yards and 3 touchdowns on 68 carries. Robinson saw time in the Bulldogs’ 65-7 national title win over TCU, scoring two touchdowns in front of a national audience.
But 2022 would be the only season in which Robinson was able to contribute substantially. He missed all of the 2023 season with a significant knee injury, then saw action in just six games last season before suffering a knee injury that also saw him miss out on spring practice.
With Robinson’s departure, Georgia’s running back room is a bit thinner, and less experienced. The Red and Black still have sophomore starter Nate Frazier, veteran Cash Jones, junior Roderick Robinson, who is also working back from injury, promising sophomores Dwight Phillips Jr., and Chauncey Bowens, and true freshman Bo Walker. While Robinson hasn’t played a ton of snaps in Athens, he had been in the program long enough to be considered a true veteran presence in the rotation.
Robinson’s departure is certainly disappointing, though not necessarily surprising. Through no fault of his own, he has simply not been able to stay on the field and get the snaps to become a mainstay on the depth chart. Perhaps this will be a good opportunity for him to find a fresh situation and get some good film to prepare for a run at the NFL. Until later…
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
