Oh. Thank. God.
Those were my words last night as the clock struck 0:00. Immediately, Mr. Squillian said “That’s how the Victory Post needs to start”, and he was right. We spent the majority of Saturday sleeping in after helping our oldest with some household upkeep, but we did take some time to go scouting for the next member of the Squillian household (not going to make any announcements until a new member actually arrives, but we have a solid contender). We watched the first three quarters on delay (thanks to TiVo), but we caught up about halfway through the third quarter. The game was only slightly better by not having to suffer through commercials, but only slightly. I was not a happy camper watching the game.
When Kentucky was so solidly beat up by the chickens last week, I was worried. I remember the last two times we’ve narrowly escaped an SEC opener on the road. I remember how teams react to a defeat they shouldn’t have had (including ours).
Many of you have pointed to depth issues (we have DEPTH issues?!?!?!), others have opined that our team did not take the Wildcats seriously and were more focused on our next opponent (the only team to beat us in the last 52 games we’ve played) than the current one. My football knowledge isn’t that deep, but I know we didn’t play anywhere near our best this week, and it nearly bit us. It really is just luck that we managed to eke out the victory this week. But, a W is still a W, whether it is by a single point (like last night) or by half a hundred. And as the Big Dawg himself said, “The best thing is, we’ve got a lot to work on.” I feel certain the team will have lots of conversation and practice over the things that can be worked on in the next 13 days.
However, it is our intention to celebrate Georgia Bulldog Football Wins whenever and wherever they occur. The ugliness or beauty of any particular win is irrelevant for the purposes of the Winning Smart Victory Post. It is therefore my deepest honor and privilege to bring to you this week’s edition of: The Winning Smart Victory Post.
Coach Kirby Smart coached his 113th game this week for the Red & Black. He currently boasts a 97-16 record and a 0.8584 winning percentage, having carded his ninety-seventh win overall in the third game of the 2024 season against the Bluegrass Felines.
At the identical juncture in their careers:
Vince Dooley’s 113th game as head coach resulted in a Georgia Bulldogs loss to the Mississippi State Bulldogs in the second game of the 1974 season, giving Coach Dooley a record of 77-32-5 and 0.7035 percentage.
Coach Mark Richt was 87-26 (0.7699) after a loss to the Sunshine State Saurians in the eighth game of the 2009 season.
One hundred and thirteen games into his head coaching career Kirby Smart is ten games ahead of Coach Mark Richt and ahead of Coach Vince Dooley by 20 games. As of now, he is holding his own versus the two winningest coaches in Georgia Football History.
As always . . .
Go ‘Dawgs !!!!
