I have a confession to make: I doubted. And I was certain that I recalled someone on DawgSports saying Kirby wouldn’t get his 100th win in Austin, but I can’t find it now. They say memory is the first thing to go. I disagree, but I can’t remember what is……
Lacking the funds/tickets/time off work to travel to Austin (although had Podunk still been with us, I might have), I had planned to watch the game with Mr. Squillian from the comfort of the couch. We had steak for dinner (mostly because Ingles has ribeyes and t-bones on sale this week, not because of our opponents, but that works, too) with sauteed mushrooms and mashed potatoes. We watched the end of the Alabama-Tennessee game. Mr. Squillian suggested we start our game with tequila shots, so we did.
All throughout the game I fully expected Texas to flip a switch. It just never happened. I did (and do) fully blame our Alabama loss on the 4 turnovers that I lay squarely at the feet of our QB (and our coach who refuses to try something different even when what we’re doing so clearly isn’t working). We were -3 in turnovers in the Alabama game. Last night we were +1. Defense wins championships. It’s about the Jimmys and Joes, not Xs and Os (or Daylens and Jalons, if you will).
In short, I never gave up hope, but I doubted.
However, it is our intention to celebrate Georgia Bulldog Football Wins whenever and wherever they occur. The ugliness or beauty of any particular win is irrelevant for the purposes of the Winning Smart Victory Post. It is therefore my deepest honor and privilege to bring to you this week’s edition of: The Winning Smart Victory Post.
Coach Kirby Smart coached his 117th game this week for the Red & Black. He currently boasts a 100-17 record and a 0.8547 winning percentage, having carded his one hundredth win overall in the seventh game of the 2024 season against the Texas Longhorns.
At the identical juncture in their careers:
Vince Dooley’s 117th game as head coach resulted in a Georgia Bulldogs win over the Vanderbilt Commodores in the sixth game of the 1974 season, giving Coach Dooley a record of 80-33-5 and 0.7051 winning percentage.
Coach Mark Richt was 90-27 (0.7672) after a win over the Vanderbilt Commodores in the twelfth game of the 2009 season.
One hundred and seventeen games into his head coaching career Kirby Smart is ten games ahead of Coach Mark Richt and ahead of Coach Vince Dooley by 20 games. As of now, he is holding his own versus the two winningest coaches in Georgia Football History.
As always . . .
Go ‘Dawgs !!!!
