Welcome to Tuesday, Bulldog fans! You’ve survived the ceremonial end of summer, as well as a smorgasbord of college football. Congratulate your liver and/or cardiovascular system as appropriate.
Moving into the new and (for some) shortened week, we look back on what we learned from the official week 1 of the season.
Is Clemson a good football team? Is Georgia just the best of the top tier of football programs, or has Clemson simply fallen from their perch as a perennial contender? I hate to say it, but that is undetermined to this point. Depending on how the Country Gentlemen handle App State and NC State in the next few weeks, we will know more. And before the month is out, our ‘Dawgs will have paid a visit to Tuscaloosa that will provide more substantive results.
What also is undetermined is if Tyler from Spartanburg relocated over the summer to Ocala. Because Billy Napier has used a preemptory challenge to the rural, central Floridians in expectation of their reaction to Florida’s pitiful Cornwallis-esque defeat Saturday.
Mykel Williams’ availability this week against Tennessee Tech: undetermined. Except we really shouldn’t need him. Coach Smart gave a few other updates to players and none seem either serious or long-term. From my couch, it sure seemed like the injury bug had infested Mercedes-Benz and nested on the UGA sideline.
Trevor Etienne’s status was undetermined until very close to kickoff Saturday. Kirby Smart had every opportunity to play the junior transfer RB against Clemson, especially after the 1H Georgia offense started so sluggishly, but upheld the full game suspension. He did not stand on some mythical high ground with announcing the suspension, he simply released the information in knowledge that the University of Georgia has fair and reasonable standards in place, and failure to meet those standards have consequences.
It is undetermined if Georgia is still the #1 team in the land, as the latest AP poll is not released until later in the day Tuesday, thanks to the extended Labor Day television viewing schedule. I wouldn’t expect much movement, other than FSU losing a few spots, Clemson dropping down, and Miami making a pretty big move upward.
With the advent of the new season, it was undetermined if the intrepid journalists and the Red and Black would continue their weekly feature grading our Bulldog position groups. But fear not – they started the season with a bang. It is undetermined if the writers changed from last season, but it does appear to be a more friendly grading curve.
What is determined, is known far and wide, and beyond dispute is that Coach Dan Magill and Claude Felton are Damn Good Dawgs. If there is a superlative, they embody it and deserve it. And as a small public token of appreciation, the new press box areas of Dooley Field will officially be named in their honor.
We also know that Carson Beck is very good, and Peyton Woodring can kick it when the ball is outside the opponents 35 yard line. They both proved themselves in the Clemson game, and were rewarded by being named SEC Co-Offensive Player and SEC Co-Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively.
That should get your morning started. It’s another Great Day to be a Georgia Bulldog. So as always…
GO ‘DAWGS!!!
