I know, I know. You probably said “it’ll come a snowy day in Thomaston before the Georgia Bulldogs are ranked in the basketball polls again.”
Well, here we are.
The Red and Black check in this week at #23 in both the AP poll and the USA Today coaches’ poll after impressive wins over #6 Kentucky and #17 Oklahoma. The ‘Dawgs last appeared in the AP poll on Jan. 10, 2011. They last graced the coaches’ poll on March 10, 2003. I don’t know if that’s the longest stretch without being ranked of any team in the SEC. But I’d be darn surprised if it isn’t.
But there’s no time to rest on laurels. The ‘Dawgs will travel to Knoxville on Wednesday to take on #6 Tennessee. The Vols had been ranked #1 until a stupifying 30 point weekend loss at Florida. After that test, Mike White’s team will host the nation’s new #1 team, Auburn, on Saturday in a sold out Stegeman Coliseum that should be a raucous atmosphere.
I’m not saying we’re a basketball school. But I can say Coach White has things moving in the right direction in a way they haven’t in Athens in a long time.
Go ‘Dawgs!!!
