Could a reunion with Jeff Ulbrich be in the cards?
The Atlanta Falcons enter the offseason looking for potential upgrades at the linebacker position, and ESPN has tabbed pending free agent Jamien Sherwood as ‘a best fit’ for the team.
Forced into a first-time starting role as a result of C.J. Moseley’s injury-marred season, Sherwood was impressive — and likely parlayed his performance into a lucrative long-term deal. The converted safety tallied 158 combined tackles in 2024, and led the league in solo tackles with 98.
The former 2021 fifth-round pick out of Auburn is of course no stranger to new defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich, who served as his DC and interim head coach in New Jersey New York. With his 6’2”, 218-pound frame, he is capable of forming a productive pair with standout linebacker Kaden Elliss. Both Troy Andersen and Nate Landman showed promise in flashes last year, but injuries combined with a lack of consistency has left Atlanta looking for an upgrade next to Elliss.
With Ulbrich at the helm of the defense, a 2025 reunion could be in the cards.
ESPN has Sherwood as the fourth-best free-agent linebacker on its board, so he’s likely to be a commodity in the open market. The Falcons’ unenviable cap situation could pose an impediment, so Atlanta will need to make some corresponding moves if they hope to lock in the linebacker.
