The 2025 NFL Scouting Combine is getting underway and the Atlanta Falcons’ top brass are in attendance. General manager Terry Fontenot addressed the media on Tuesday morning, fielding several questions.
Naturally, the topic of highly paid backup quarterback Kirk Cousins came up. Fontenot first addressed the injury controversy surrounding Cousins which stemmed from a hit he took during the Saints game in Week 10.
“Look, Kirk was on the injury report leading into the Denver game and he wasn’t on the injury report outside of that,” said Fontenot. “We were only aware of that particular week. We talked about it when that change was made, it was a football decision. There wasn’t anything injury-related.”
Cousins completely fell apart from Weeks 10-15, throwing one touchdown to nine interceptions and leading the team to a 1-4 record. The team benched Cousins in December and went with Michael Penix Jr. for the final three games.
Most expect the team to move on from the veteran QB during the offseason, but it could be tricky with Cousins’ contract. When pressed about the quarterback’s future in Atlanta, Fontenot said it was a unique situation but wasn’t willing to give any details about the team’s plans.
“It is unique,” said Fontenot. “With that, there has to be a high level of communication and anything that happens, obviously, everyone has to be on the same page with us.”
“We just have to do what’s right for the Atlanta Falcons,” explained Fontenot.
