Atlanta looks to beef up its receiver group for the summer ahead by going north of the border.
Terry Fontenot apparently makes a trip to Canada once a year to, I dunno, see the sights and sounds in Toronto or something. He always comes back with a new player or two to add to the Atlanta Falcons roster, too.
After signing cornerback Dee Alford and wide receiver Brayden Lenius in 2022, defensive back Jamal Peters in 2023, and wide receiver Austin Mack last year, Fontenot has signed Toronto Argonauts wide receiver Makai Polk to a reserve/futures deal, per Justin Dunk at 3 Down Nation. As has been the case in the past despite the spotty track record of these players making the roster, Polk will have a legitimate shot at sticking around in 2025.
The former Raven and Giant spent last year with the Argonauts and had a stellar season, putting up 61 receptions for over 1,000 yards and five touchdowns and continuing that production into the postseason and the Grey Cup, the CFL’s championship game. The 6’3”, slim receiver is not a speedster but has shown quality hands, route running, and ball skills in his college and CFL careers, traits the Falcons could always use.
In Atlanta, Polk joins a receiver corps that looks pretty slim at the moment but will likely bulk up this spring in free agency and the draft. Atlanta has their top three receivers locked up and will likely return KhaDarel Hodge, but there’s an opportunity to jockey for a final spot or two with the likes of 2024 draft pick Casey Washington, Chris Blair, and reserve/future signings and former practice squad players Phillip Dorsett, Dylan Drummond, and Jesse Matthews.
We’ll see if Polk can take the path followed by Alford and push his way on to this roster in the coming months, but for now, give him our customary warm welcome.
