Jenkins revealed on Monday that Smart participated in play-groups on Saturday and Monday morning. He’s expected to have another play-group and return to action later this week. “Marcus is really close,” Jenkins said. ” . . . Somewhere in that Indiana and Atlanta time frame, we’re hopeful that he’ll be back in the lineup then.”

With the Grizzlies trailing in the fourth quarter Sunday against the Minnesota Timberwolves, Smart appeared to be yelling at his teammates during a timeout. Smart appeared to yell, “It’s embarrassing, it’s embarrassing!” a couple of times. The Grizzlies came out and went on a run, trimming the Timberwolves’ lead to 12 before Minnesota reset and closed the game out. The former Boston Celtics guard was traded to Memphis before the start of this season. He has been out with an injury since Nov. 14. The 119-97 loss was the fourth straight defeat for the Grizzlies, who still have not won a home game all season.
